Swift is the pioneering new microwave therapy for skin. With treatment times in seconds, Swift provides Podiatrists and Dermatologists with a new, precise and easy way of treating soft tissue lesions.
What are warts?
Warts are a common contagious, non-cancerous infection that consist of raised bumps on the outer layers of the skin. They are caused by strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and can occur on different areas of the body. Plantar warts are those that appear on the soles of your feet and can cause considerable discomfort. They can be difficult to get rid of without medical intervention as the HP Virus evades the body’s immune system. Generally, warts will go away on their own in time, however plantar warts often require intervention as they can be very painful.
What is SWIFT therapy?
SWIFT is a new technology developed in the UK that emits a focused microwave signal into the skin in order to eradicate warts, verrucae and papilloma’s. The microwave signal is delivered through a special probe applied to the skin to treat the affected tissue During treatment, a process called Heat Shock occurs. Heat Shock is when the wart releases proteins into the circulatory system, triggering the immune system to register the source of HP Virus infection and begin fighting it off.
Will I feel anything?
During treatment, the wart is rapidly heated to 42-45ºC, which can cause moderate discomfort for around 1-2 seconds. It is not uncommon for patients to feel a sharp sensation, similar to an injection. This temperature range is safe to the human body and is a few degrees warmer than a hot bath. Unlike most treatments for verruca, pain felt during the treatment quickly subsides, and only in rare cases is there any prolonged pain. It will not cause any serious tissue damage or scarring.
How safe are microwaves?
Microwaves are a form of non-ionising radiation, meaning that they can not cause damage to the DNA of living things. SWIFT uses very low energy levels that are only able to vibrate water molecules and cause friction within skin cells, not causing damage to the DNA.
Aside from the kitchen appliance, microwaves are used in a number of everyday applications. Standard wifi uses microwaves, mobile phones, bluetooth, and cordless phones all use microwaves to send data over short distances. Furthermore, most satellite communications systems (including GPS navigation systems) are also based on the use of microwaves – we interact with microwaves in more ways than we know, every day.
How many treatments will I need?
This will depend on how you respond to treatment. On average, most patients require three monthly treatments. In some cases, your warts will resolve in less time, however, in more chronic cases you may require a fourth treatment. Your podiatrist will be able to discuss your treatment plan with you.
Can anyone receive this treatment?
With a few exceptions, most people with skin lesions can receive treatment. Your Podiatrist will carry out an assessment prior to treatment to advise you on your suitability.
