Tinea is the most common foot fungal infection of the skin. Moisture and dirt that is trapped in the toe spaces create a perfect environment to grow fungus. Closed toe footwear is the perfect warm, dark moist environment for fungal growth. Tinea foot infections can also spread to the hands and groin.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of tinea can be anything from an intense burning or itchy sensation to nothing. Some people complain that their feet have a strange cheese like smell.
Tinea can look like
- White, soggy appearance with peeling skin in between the toes.
- Tiny fluid filled sacs on the soles of the feet.
- Dry redness and scaling of the skin over soles of the feet.

Tinea infections can be treated with toe spaces that allow more airflow into the toe web spaces and creams.
What can I do?
Foot hygiene is of the utmost importance. Make sure that you are washing and drying carefully in between your toes after a shower. Shoes need to be kept in a well ventilated area. It is helpful to rotate you shoes so that they can dry out. Socks or stockings need to be washed after each use.
